Howard Mandel of Toront, Ontario - Doctor Rating

Dr. Mandel is a very kind man, always willing to accomodate patients in short space of time. He is very helpful with all medical aspects. He is very professional and I would recommend any patient to see him as their family Doctor.

To me being a good doctor means being able to diagnose and listen well. While I think Mandel has good intentions he has repeatedly failed to diagnose what should have been relatively simple conditions. He tends to be paternalistic and dismissive of patient ideas and doesn´ t encourage self-care. Recently I was prescribed a drug and when I asked what it was and what it was for he literally said, " you don´ t need to know" . Mandel is quick with the prescription pad and by my estimation has an vast over-estimation of the value of psych drugs and very much under-estimates their risk.

If this evaluation seems a little jaded, this last month I was finally able to self-diagnose a devastating condition that to my mind should have been an easy call. He congratulated me for figuring it out, but really doc, wasn´ t that your job?

On the very first appointment a patient came screaming into the office about her need to have a prescription re-newed. This Doctor wastes your time requiring you to take time off work just so he can bill for an appointment to renew medication that has no point to be seen again. This doctor will only deal with one COMPLAINT at a time if you have two or more thing wrong with you then you have to book appointments for each COMPLAINT. He is Jewish and does not hide the fact. He is best with Jewish people as you feel alienated by the mixing of Jewish faith and beliefs with medicine.
